What is a Bat Mitzvah?
Bat Mitzvah is Hebrew for "daughter of the commandment." When a Jewish girl turns 13 (or in some congregations 12), she has all the rights and obligations of a Jewish adult. This milestone is automatic, but is often celebrated with ceremonies in synagogues and parties. Since Sofia becoming a bat mitzvah is such an important milestone and joyous occasion, we look forward to celebrating together with family and friends.
When Should I Arrive to the Bat Mitzvah?
You should arrive at Temple Judea at 5 PM; the ceremony will begin at 5:15 PM. Sofia has spent years preparing for this day, so we would ask that our guests be respectful by arriving at the synagogue on time. Sofia will be leading the ceremony, and that's something you don't want to miss.

What Do I Wear to the Bat Mitzvah Service and Party?
In keeping with our theme, all guests are encouraged to wear “Miami Chic” attire. Think bright colored dresses, guayaberas, and of course, fun shoes. The Party will immediately follow the Service, so you should plan on wearing the same outfit to both events. Men are encouraged to have their heads covered as an act of respect and it’s Jewish practice to wear a kippah/yarmulke - Sofia will provide these when you arrive.

Can I Bring a Guest to the Bat Mitzvah?
No. Much like a wedding, a bat mitzvah is a large celebration planned well in advance and the hosts will need to know the number of guests to expect in order to provide adequate food, drink and seating. Unfortunately, no siblings, children, or parents that weren’t specified on the invitation may attend.

How Much Should I Participate in the Bat Mitzvah service?
When the congregation stands, you should stand. When they sit, you should sit. It's respectful to participate in the service as much as you feel comfortable doing so.

Am I Allowed to Use My Cell Phone at the Bat Mitzvah service?
No. Please either turn off or silent your phone and refrain from texting throughout the service.
And because it is Shabbat, the Jewish holy day, no cameras/photos are allowed at the service.

Do I need to be Jewish to Attend the Service?
Not at all!! We look forward to seeing all our friends and family at the Bat Mitzvah service!
What About Gifts?
Gifts are common at Bat Mitzvahs but never expected or required. The most common gift is money or traditional Jewish cultural gifts. Here’s a Jewish “fun fact” for you: most monetary gifts are $18 or multiples thereof. In Jewish culture, the number 18 holds special significance. It corresponds to the Hebrew word “Chai,” which means “life.” Giving $18 or in multiples of 18 is symbolic of giving “life” or good luck.
